When Amy Stern of Northeast Jewish Center, started filming videos, she did not foresee more than a hobby. Attending several classes at Jacob Burns Center, she watched “Real Challenge for Non-Profits,” which “focuses on teaching people to make short videos for non-profits to put on websites as fund raisers.” A telecom industry consultant with 30 years at Verizon in business development, Stern wanted to help promote public awareness, enabling organizations to achieve their goals.
“Some day,” she mused, “I’d like to turn it into a profession or retirement job, but right now I’m still on the learning curve.”
As an active member of Northeast Jewish Center in Yonkers, {her husband Chuck Greenberg is President}, she decided to do a video about NEJC (www.northeastjewishcenter.com). “Since membership has been dwindling, it is a good, challenging project to kind of capture the feeling of the shul. Prospective new members could watch the video and, hopefully join,” she explained.
With members’ assistance, Stern hopes to distribute fliers to real estate agents for people moving into new neighborhoods. “Empty-nesters” from other parts of the County, perhaps not active in a shul, “but all of a sudden having a vacuum to fill and time in their lives, might provide prime candidates.” A marketing plan is being devised to attract people, originally uninvolved, to become excited by what they see. Features highlighted include members decorating the Succah, the annual Gala Dinner-Dance, a morning minyan, and a recent Men’s Club breakfast meeting with Congresswoman Nita Lowey. A brief video detailing NEJC’s history, is Stern’s next undertaking. Currently, she is working on her second video for The Westchester Food Bank.
“Freelancing is great, enabling me to seek projects where an impact can be made on organizations that do good work and need help to get the word out.”
