Senior Centers Bid Fond Farewell to Rogowsky

POSTED: JANUARY 2012

By Stephen E. Lipken

Retiring Westchester County Legislator and Chairman, Public Safety and Security, Martin Rogowsky (D-Harrison) appeared at Harrison Senior Center on Friday, December 2, the first of a series of enthusiastically received “big sendoffs” including Port Chester and Rye Brook Senior Centers.
Rogowsky emotionally stated, “I come here with mixed emotions. I’m in my fifth decade running for office and decided not to run. I started in 1974 as a young lawyer of 25 running for State Legislature, which I lost.

“I become Chief of Staff for Congressman Richard Ottinger in Washington where I met my wife Tobi and brought her back here in 1983. Today I am voting on legislation to get $1 million dollars back from the Mamaroneck Sewer District. Several years ago 59 homeowners in North Castle had septic tank problems. It cost us $2 million to get their pipes. I am trying to get some of that money back.
“We work on a lot of not very sexy things, including sewer taxes; roads; support for seniors; public safety and Emergency Medical Service. County Executive Rob Astorino is laying off a lot of people and I want to be sure that it does not affect public safety,” Rogowsky stressed.

Commenting from her office, ex-Mayor Joan B. Walsh said of Rogowsky, “He certainly lived and breathed County government. He could talk endlessly about merging two County sewer trunk lines for taxation purposes and preventing expansion of our County Airport.”

Rogowsky will be going into the real estate business after his term ends. He and his wife will be honored on February 11th at Westchester Jewish Center in Mamaroneck during the Westchester Jewish Council’s 36th Anniversary Gala.
